Today begins the first day of my 2nd Annual Indie Author Week where I will be featuring articles, giveaways, and all sorts of other content from some of my favorite independent/self-published authors.
Today I am featuring Angela Carlie, author of Spider Wars, which is the second in the fantastic Lords of Shifters series. Thank you so much, Angela, for writing this very thought-provoking post! Look out for my review of Spider Wars later this week!
The Humane Society. Have you visited your local shelter lately?
Until recently, I only thought of the Humane Society as a place where dogs and cats are housed, given food and water, medical attention, and love until the animals' Forever Homes are found. I've brought home many new-found friends from the shelter, including our newest friend, Louie. Here's a photo of him. He's got the biggest heart.
Most the animals I've met that have come from the shelter have big hearts. They seem to know despair and what it feels like to be abandoned. They know the woes of the world, and I believe this is the reason for their loving dispositions. Thousands of animals go through these shelters. Some don't ever leave. Funny thing, though, as we still have people breeding animals and pet stores in every mall. Sad, really.
But moving on to my point. I was browsing the Humane Society's website and came upon this page: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cows/
Who knew that the Humane Society was also an advocate for factory farmed animals and wild animals? I didn't. Holy macaroni! This was a huge discovery for me.
The people who know me, know that I'm a supporter of veganism. Not just for the animal welfare beliefs, but for my health. It's proven that people who don't eat animal products live longer, reduce their chances of heart disease, and usually don't get cancer. Even the American Dietetic Association now known as Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports the health benefits of eating a vegan diet. A resource I have always found beneficial is the documentary and book "Forks Over Knives."
Now, I've fallen off the vegan path a time or two. And most recently, I've only followed a vegetarian diet. But since being reminded by the above webpage the horrific cruelty we put upon the lives bringing us dairy products, I've decided it's time to step back on the path and follow it through. Not only for the lives of these animals, but for my own health as well.
It's hard. I told my husband today, "I wish life was as easy as a cheeseburger." It's true. But then again, if life was as easy as a cheeseburger, I wouldn't know compassion. And really, cheeseburgers aren't that easy.
Think about it.
