For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed both books and movies almost equally sometimes. The first time I remember grabbing a book because I liked a movie was in the 90s when the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie came out (way before the cool series with Sara Michelle Gellar). It's full of 90s slang, fashion, and funny performances by actors who were no one then but have gotten much more time in the limelight since. We're talking Hilary Swank, Luke Perry, David Arquette, Kristy Swanson, and Paul Reubens (of PeeWee Herman fame/infamy). Not to mention Donald Sutherland (Kiefer's dad), Rutger Hauer, and Natasha Gregson Wagner (you know, Natalie Wood's daughter).
Synopsis
Buffy Summers has the lifestyle any young woman could want. Cheerleading, dating the captain of the basketball team, and copious amounts of time spent shopping with friends. She had no idea of her true calling until a mysterious man named Merrick approached her and told her that she is the Slayer; one woman called to defend the world from vampires. Reluctant to concede to the fact, Buffy soon learns that Merrick speaks the truth and so begins to take her new life seriously while trying to maintain the sense of normality her life had once been. With her best friends slowly abandoning her, Buffy finds solace in the town outcast, Pike, who knows very well the terrors that have arisen. Together, they combat the forces of the old and powerful vampire, Lothos, who has his eyes set on Buffy.
So Richie Tankerseley Cusick novelized the movie and it was actually very good novelization as they go. Usually when the process of book into movie is reversed to movie into book, they book is super corny but this one was pretty faithful. It's seriously funny, even if you weren't very aware of the 90s (or even there).
If you can find either the movie (which is apparently on Netflix instant watch because I'm looking at it now even as I write) or the book, I think you should definitely partake if you enjoy silly, B-level movies and fun. But if you're a die-hard Sarah Michelle-Buffy fan, don't watch or read!
Best quotes:
Kimberly: Buffy? What's your sitch? You're acting like the thing from another tax bracket.
Buffy: Great. My secret weapon is PMS. That's just terrific. Thanks for telling me.
Buffy's Mom: Bye-Bye Bobby!
Jeffrey: Bye! She thinks my name is Bobby?
Buffy: It's possible she thinks *my* name's Bobby.
What book to movie or movie to book was your favorite?

I loved the Buffy movie. I was at my public library's book sale yesterday and saw a ton of the Buffy books. I never read the series. I thought about buying them, but I didn't know if my 7th graders would be interested. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow. =)

I am sad now that I never saw this movie. I thought it would be funny, but the series was so serious.
